The TARDIS(Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) is a very unique ship. Used only by the Time Lords, the TARDIS looks small on the outside, but it is gargantuan on the inside, due to Time Lord technology. The inside of the TARDIS is actually in a different dimension! Here is a picture of the most famous TARDIS:
Here are some pictures of the very large interior (the console room changes as the TARDIS regenerates; this is why the two pictures are different):
The most fantastic thing about TARDISes is that they have something known as a "chameleon circuit"! This allows TARDISes change appearance in every world so as to blend in with the environment and be less noticeable. You can also keep the chameleon circuit on one setting. Basically, you could fly through space and time in a Trojan Horse, or even a Weinermobile!
Another thing is that TARDISes come in hundreds of different models. Each one has some new aspect to it. While the Doctor uses an old, reliable Type 40, you could use a Type 53 and it may have totally new features! Some of the classic Who's have even talked about the TARDISes being in the hundreds by now(105, 106, 107...). The rest of the 305 Type 40's that existed were decommissioned and replaced. Romano(Four's companion) states that they aren't even in the Academy sylabis anymore.
Type 40's need six pilots to fly properly(only happened once in the show at the Medusa Cascade). It is unknown if other models have the same piloting needs, but it is very likely. Better train your companion!
One thing to keep in mind is that TARDISes are living. A TARDIS gets symbiotically attached to their pilots. It may be a mother, a father, a girlfriend, a boyfriend, a best friend, a love-hate situation, or even a wife(like the Doctor and Sexy).
Without the Chameleon Circuit working, a TARDIS can be stuck on one camouflage setting or be stuck on its original form. Here's a regular Type 40 TARDIS,

As you can see, it is very plain and circular. Probably about seven feet tall, enough to allow a normal humanoid pilot to enter. It is in a state of temporal grace(but on occasion that gets circumvented). So...
"It's smaller on the outside." - Clara Oswin Oswald
"It's bigger on the inside." - Every Other Freaking Companion
Inside there's an awful lot of space because the door is dimensionally transcendental, which means that it is a doorway to another dimension.
Type 40 TARDIS TT Capsules were built to last. Sexy(the Doctor's TARDIS) has withstood falling for miles and miles, suffered 3,000 degree heat without scorching, even hit by an alien replica of the Titanic in mid-flight, but didn't break.
